Antique Japanese Shakudo/Nanako Tsuba - Samurai in Boat, with Papers. Circa Edo period, early to mid-19th Century. Nice quality mokko-shaped tsuba made of shakudo with a nanako surface, and high relief, gold and silver designs of waves, samurai in a boat, a crane, and a turtle; the reverse with waves and a rock. Wonderful detail to the inlaid gold and silver sail on the boat. The faces of the people are done in gold, silver, and copper. Tsuba measures 61mm wide x 68mm tall. There is a kozuka hitsuana with a gold edge, next to the nakago ana. The surface of the tsuba has a very fine nanako field, with a larger size nanako stippling around the raised gold-plated rim. Unsigned, but includes an NBTHK paper dated Heisei 10 (1998) that attributes it to "Kyo-Kinko" during Edo times, and a Japanese sword dealer fact sheet dated 2015. In deluxe wood box with pillow. Condition is excellent, the surface having a nice dark patina with some lighter mottling mainly on the reverse side. There is minor wear to the gold on the high edges of the relief figures and boat, and minor wear to the gold-covered surface on the rim. Est.: $400-$600.
