The 2nd generation Kaga Kanewaka is a highly rated smith of the JoJosaku level. This sword was made in the last year of his life (he died at age 66 in 1677). The sword comes with a full-length oshigata rubbing wrapped in a scroll. The koshirae is a mixture of old and new: the tsuka looks new, made for the sword, with clean same' ray skin, and fresh gold colored silk ito cord wrapping; the fuchi and kashira are antique pieces made of shakudo with a nanako background and figures of people under trees, with gold overlaid details. They are not signed. The menuki are antique and made of shakudo and gold, with fine workmanship depicting bundles of flowers and leaves. The tsuba is antique, Soten School type, oval in shape, with a thin polished shakudo rim. The theme is people in a house, looking outside, with trees, fences, and mountains. The features are highlighted in silver, gold, and copper and measures 66mm wide x 71mm tall. It is not signed. The saya has some age, with a carved swirl design done in red over black lacquer, with a polished black horn koiguchi and a silver kojiri with a dragon in the clouds carved in relief. A wooden tsunagi replica of the blade holds the mounts together. The saya has some light soiling and shows age, but no cracks or dings in the lacquer. There is a dark red woven sageo cord attached thru the kurikata. There are no shitodome eyelets in the kurikata. There is a nice silk brocade sword bag with cord for the mounts. A very beautiful well-made sword and with very nice mounts. Est.: $5,000-$7,000.
