Antique Japanese Daisho Set of Koshirae. Very nice set of daisho koshirae mounts (no blades), with matching, signed, iron Soten School tsubas, and matching menuki and fuchi/kashira sets. The tsukas are covered in fancy large nodule same' ray skin and wrapped with dark blue/green silk ito cord. The menuki are depictions of sea life, octopus, lobster, and sea shells done in shakudo and gold. They are a matching set for both swords. The fuchi and kashira sets look to be of a similar theme and construction, featuring samurai in armor, engaging in battle, etc., made of shakudo with fine nanako backgrounds, samurai in battle, etc, carved in relief with gold and copper details. They are not signed and are in good condition, showing some age and minor soiling. The tsubas are round, Soten School, iron sukashi , featuring samurai in battle, with copper faces and inlaid gold details, both have gold rims attached with engraved decorations, and both are signed with the same three-character signature. The dai tsuba measures 71mm wide x 76.5mm tall. The sho tsuba measures 67mm wide x 72mm tall. Both tsubas have kozuka and kogai hitsuanas on either side of the nakago ana. Both are in good condition with a nice dark patina to the iron, and minor losses to the gold inlaid details. There is a kozuka and signed ko-gatana in the pocket of the wakizashi saya. The kozuka has a thin gold over copper body with a shakudo/nanako panel with three gods done in shakudo and gold overlay with carved details. Condition of the kozuka is fair, the thin gold covering on the body is scratched and worn, with several dings to the body. The shakudo panel is very nice showing little wear. The ko-gatana blade is age grayed and lightly rusted, but should clean well. The sayas are covered in textured lacquer. The katana saya is a dark black color with black horn kojiri, kurikata, and koiguchi. There are a few small dings and dents in the surface, with minor cracking to the lacquer and light scratches. A wooden tsunagi blade holds the mount together. The wakizashi saya has the same textured surface, but is a little more brown/black in color, with a smooth rounded end, and a shakudo kurikata decorated with turnips and leaves done in silver, copper, and gold. The small metal fitting at the base of the kozuka pocket is of the same material and theme. The koiguchi is black horn. A small wooden tsunagi holds the mount together. Condition is very good, with only a couple of small dings to the surface of the saya. Included with the daisho set are two matching silk storage bags with cords, and a printed fact sheet from a Japanese sword dealer dated 2016. Overall a very nice set. Est.: $4,000-$7,000.
