Ancient India: Taxila, inscribed die-struck coinage, copper coin of 'Doyakadesha' region/city state, (c.100-50 BC), MAC 4426/Pieper 1105, 4.24g. Obv: facing elephant in centre, hill & hollow cross to left, palm tree in railing to right. Rev: horse facing left, traces of three-arch hill above and a six-arched hill to left; Kharoshthi legend Doyakadesa / Damashadate.

Very fine, Very rare.

Coins of this type bear two different legends, 'Hiranyasame' and 'Dojaka/Doyakadesa'. The first has been associated with a locality called 'The Golden Hermitage', where the Indo-Greek king Agathokles also struck coins. It has been recently suggested that the latter legend be read as 'Damashadate'. What these legends mean is still in doubt, but most likely they were localities/city states in the Gandhara region.
