Satavahanas, alloyed copper coin of Naganika and Siri Satakani (c.100-50 BC), MCSI 141, 7.83g. Obv: Brahmi legend Naganika… inscribed vertically on a pillar surmounted by a horse; Brahmi legend Raño Si(ri)… to right. Rev: 'Ujjain’ symbol with Swastikas in each orb within a rectangular border.

Extremely fine, Very rare.

Naganika was the first indigenous Queen to have struck coins in her name, jointly with her husband Siri Satakani. Famous for the dedicatory inscription in the Satavahana family temple at Naneghat, she is known to have performed several sacrifices, including two Ashwamedhas. The figure of the horse on top of the sacrificial pillar clearly alludes to this important Vedic sacrifice associated with universal kingship and conquest.
