Satavahana feudatories in Vidarbha/Central Maharashtra, the 'Varuni' Maharathis, alloyed copper coin of Maharathi Chulavaruni, (150-200 AD), 3.91g. Obv: Lion standing, facing right; Brahmi legend Maharathisa Chulavarunisa around, clockwise from 12 o'clock. Rev: Tree-in-railing with an annulet to right.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
The Varuni Maharathis most likely ruled as semi-independent feudatories in Central Maharashtra, when the focus of the imperial Satavahanas shifted more and more into the Andhra country in the 2nd century AD.
