Post-Mauryan tribal monarchies, Pauravas - arsenical copper coin of Mahindramitra, (c.1st cent. BC), PAIC 1386, 4.73g. Obv: lion seated facing right, traces of a five-hooded cobra, surmounted by a parasol below; Brahmi legend (Ra)ño Poravasa Mahi(da)…above. Rev: tree-in-railing, Kharoshthi letters A and Spa to left and right, traces of triangle-headed standard to left.

Very fine, Extremely rare.

The Pauravas were probably the same people as Porus, who fought against Alexander the Great on the Jhelum river, belonged to. Their coins are amongst the rarest of the so-called 'tribal' issues.
