Mathura/Kaushambi?, pre-Kushan monarchical coinage - alloyed copper coin of Virasena (c.50-100 AD), not listed in PAIC, 2.17g. Obv: Brahmi legend Virasenasa, zigzag line below. Rev: Traces of an animal device.

Very fine, Extremely rare.

Coins with legend 'Virasena' from Mathura are generally attributed to the post-Kushan period. However, the palaeography of Brahmi seen on this coin, as well as its general fabric is indicative of a 1st century AD date. It is likely that this is a new ruler, either from Mathura or from Kaushambi.
