Mahatalavaras, Telangana/ Andhra region - uninscribed 'horse' type copper coin, (c.250-300 AD), unpublished in major sources, 1.21g. Obv: horse standing on a pedestal, facing left. Rev: sacred 'Bhadrapitha' symbol in a double rectangular border.

Extremely fine, Very rare.

The horse was a dynastic emblem of the Mahatalavaras, who rose to prominence in the post-Satavahana period in Telangana, as feudatories and matrimonial relatives of the Ikshvakus. Their religious affiliation is not yet certain but the employment of Bhadrapitha symbol might suggest links to Jainism.
