Maharathis of Central Maharashtra/Vidarbha - copper coin of 'Varuni' Maharathis, (c.200-250 AD), not listed in PAIC, 3.68g. Obv: Elephant with trunk raised facing left, Brahmi legend Maharathi…. sa to right; overstruck on a Satavahana 'elephant'-type coin from the same region. Rev: Plain.

Extremely fine, Very rare.

The 'Varuni' Maharathis are known from two individuals - Chulavaruni and Pusavaruni. However, as the legend in truncated on this coin it is difficult to say which of the two have struck it.
