Lesser Satavahanas of Banavasi, alloyed copper coin of Vinhukada Buddhananda Satakani (c.250-300 AD), PAIC 2108-2110, 11.67g. Obv: bull standing facing right, trident behind; Brahmi legend from 11 o'clock Dhamamaharajasa Vinhukada Budhananda Satakanisa. Rev: composite symbol of six arched hill, surmounted by a strung bow-and-arrow, tree to right, wavy line below enclosed within an arrangement of small circles along the margin.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

Coins of Buddhananda Satakani clearly show Shaivite influence in their design but the king refers to him with the title 'Dharma Maharaja', i.e. Righteous King. His name has the word 'Buddha' in it. This overlapping of religious sentiments in typical of the 4th century when patron-client relationship between followers of different religions underwent a steady change and so did the religions themselves.
