DEMO LOT
Hiranyakas of Rayalaseema/South-Central Karnataka, lead coin of Skanda…, (250-300 AD), unpublished and one of the finest specimens known till date, 13.93g. Obv: Horse standing facing left on a pedestal, auspicious symbols (a pair of fish, Shrivatsa, Bhadrapeetha, fire altar) around its head; Brahmi legend …tasa Herañakānām Khada…. From 5 to 9 o'clock. Rev: Within a rectangular border, a tree and a ten-arched hill surmounted by a crescent, with wavy line below.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

The Hiranyakas rose to prominence as a dynasty after the fall of the Satavahanas in mid-3rd century AD. They were matrimonially related to the Ikshvakus. Although many Hiranyaka coins are known, those with clearly legible inscriptions are exceedingly rare. The name of the ruler on this coin is unfortunately truncated beyond Khada (Skanda), but the symbolism of the horse surrounded by auspicious symbols, some alluding to Jainism, are a unique and important feature of this coin.
