Hiranyakas (as feudatories), lead coin of Vasithiputa Khada(rakhita?), (200-250 AD), unpublished in major sources, 13.66g. Obv: Horse standing facing right on a platform, a Sankha shell in the front and a Shrivatsa above; Brahmi legend Maha… Vasithiyaputasa Herañakānām Khada(rakhita?)sa. Rev: Six-arched hill and a tree-in-railing over a platform with curvy line below, all enclosed in a circular border.

About very fine, Extremely rare.

The Hiranyakas were feudatories of the Ikshvaku dynasty in Central Karnataka / Rayalseema region and the horse was their dynastic emblem. While many uninscribed or partly inscribed coins of the dynasty are known, it is exceptionally unusual to come across a specimen with so much of the legend visible and legible. Unfortunately, some details like the full title and part of the proper name of the issuer are missing but the rendering Vasithiyaputasa instead of the usual Vasithiputasa is interesting and unique. The family name 'Hiranyka’ (Herañaka) is indicated in the plural suggesting its use as a surname.
