Ancient Central Malwa, Vidisha/Bes-Betwa confluence region - local uninscribed copper punch-marked coin, (c.200-150BC), unlisted in major publications, 6.40g. Obv: five very ornate symbols - river with fishes and turtles, tree-in-railing (in centre), a stylized Shrivatsa on a pedestal, an 'Ujjain' symbol with smaller 'Ujjain' symbols in orbs and taurine-headed standards within quadrants, and a decorated three-arched hill topped by a triangle-headed standard. Rev: a bold punch of 'eight-petal lotus bloom.

The coin is remarkable for the symbolism of its punches. The symbols are highly complex and executed with great artistic command. The lotus punch on the reverse suggests an Eastern orientation within the Bes-Betwa valley near Vidisha. In all likelihood, the city-state of Bhagila was located in this region.
