Archaic silver punch-marked coin of a type of uncertain provenance and attribution, struck to the Vimsatika standard, with symbolic configuration ABBC. Most likely, it belongs to a series from the middle Gangetic Valley, 4.41g.
Good very fine, Very rare.
These coins have appeared on the market before with varied provenances ranging from Bharatpur to Jaunpur. As such they have been attributed to various 'Janapadas' like 'Matsya', 'Maru' etc but these attributions remain speculative. For an attempt at cataloguing, see article 'A New Local Type of Early Punch-marked Coins' by Sharad Sharma and Badri Prasad Verma, in Numismatic Digest vol. 36-37 (2012-2013). The symbols the coins have are entirely geometric and composed of intricate whorls, and most coins of this type have a small punch with 'three barley grains' design on the reverse.
