Archaic silver punch-marked coin, Upper Mahanadi Valley region, 'Sonepur hoard' type, usually attributed to 'Kalinga’ or 'Vidarbha' Janapadas' - ABCD configuration, MATEC nos. 3951-3956, 1.18g. Obv: Four symbols - 1x Elephant, 1x Bull, 1x a grain-like pellet within a dotted border, 1x pair of oxen yoked to a plough.Rev: Plain.

In his recent study on archaic punch-marked coins from the Deccan, Prashant Kulkarni has drawn interesting parallels between the 'pellet’ symbol and megalithic funerary architecture.
