DEMO LOT
Archaic silver punch-marked coin, Western Maharashtra/Deccan region, Upper Krishna valley, generally attributed to 'Kuntala Janapada', (450-400 BC), Vimshatika, 4.95g. Obv: Bold taurine-like symbol with two small lines to left. Rev: Blank. Unpublished in major sources.

Extremely fine, Unique so far.

The fabric and type of the coin is very similar to the 'pulley'-type punch-marked coins known chiefly from a small area near Wai, upstream Krishna River. Two similar coins were reported from the earliest find of these coins at Sultanpur in around 1875. However, subsequent finds from the same region did not have coins of this type. Most likely, these coins represent the earliest indigenous circulatory currency in the Deccan, to the South of the Vindhya Mountains.
