Ancient South-Central Malwa - alloyed copper coin of Athakanagara city-state, (c.200-150 BC), unpublished in major catalogues, of high historical interest, 4.92g. Obv: A multi-sided punch enclosing a tree-in-railing, some branches of which are replaced with a Brahmi legend …(thaka na)/ra Sasvatha. Rev: A composite symbol of three-arched hill within an open cross, flanked by a river and small taurine and treskelis symbols.

Extremely fine, Very rare.

The name Athakanagara occurs in a donative inscription by a monk at Sanchi. Very little else is known about this city; however, it is likely that it was located in Central or South Malwa. The letters on the coin are of an early palaeographic style comparable to those of Sanchi inscriptions.
