Ancient Northern Maharashtra/Khandesh (Tapi, Narmada Valley), die-struck lead coin, post-Mauryan period, (200-150 BC), 12.65g. Obv: Symbolic configuration, plough-standard above a three-arched hill, tree-in-railing, wheel standard, traces of brahmi legend …Vasu(bha?)dayam above. Rev: 'Ujjain' symbol within an open cross in a dotted rectangle. Unpublished in major sources.

Very fine+, Extremely rare.

This is a highly unusual and significant coin from the post-Mauryan inscribed series of local coins from the Northern Deccan. The legend evidently ends in the feminine sixth case ending, suggesting that the name mentioned is the name either of a goddess, or of a river, or of a city. The symbol on reverse is typically seen on coins from Prakashe, an early settlement site on the banks of Tapi River in NE Maharashtra.
