Ananda' chieftains of Karnataka - 'elephant' type lead coin of Mulananda (c.200-250 AD), unpublished in major sources, 15.49g. Obv: Elephant standing facing right, small hill between legs; Brahmi legend Raño Mulana(da)… above. Rev: Well-executed sacred tree in railing between by two banners with an additional railing suggested by curved ladder-like feature below.

Good Very fine, Very rare.

The 'Ananda' chieftains rose to power in South- Central Karnataka after the decline of the Satavahanas in the region. The reverse motif of this coin bears similarity to the heavy lead coins struck by Kanha, the son of a Maharathi of the Sidaka family but on his coins the animal faces left.
