Altered Model 1833 Hall-North Breechloading Percussion Carbine, NVSN, .52 cal., 21" round barrel, small block-blade front and notched rear sights, marked "NWP" (inspector Nahum W. Patch) at breech, has stud at muzzle retaining the button-tip ramrod; 9.5" receiver has 6" hinged breechblock (with hammer and nipple) marked "U.S./S. North/Midltn/Conn/1836" that tips up for loading when released by hook-type lever below; steel fittings include hook and stock plate, trigger guard with two finger-ridges behind bow and sling-ring at long rear tang, 7" hinged 2-part implement bay door extending to flat buttplate, two spring-retained bands. Mfg'd ca. 1834-39. Condition is very good as altered, the steel parts retaining traces of brown lacquer but otherwise bright. Stock with faint "NWP" cartouche at left wrist. The short 21" barrel is from a Model 1842 carbine, without the ramrod-bayonet and mount of the M1833. Breech hinge and mechanism are secure and function as designed. Action is crisp, smoothbore is clean showing overall moderate pitting. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
