A WARTIME LOG BOOK
A Wartime Log', by Art and Lee Beltrone, Howell Press, Inc., 1994, 208 pages, 9.75 x 7.5 inches. Front flyleaf page has first day of issue 'POW & MIA' stamp. Signed original artwork by the artist Lieutenant Edward S. Wodicka on front flyleaf. The Y.M.C.A. developed a program to give POWs paper and art supplies to get them through their captivity, thus the 'Wartime Log' was made. The book goes into detail about the lives of POWs before, during, and after their imprisonment. The book uses artwork from numerous artists, original photographs, and prisoner's own words to portray their life in the camp to the reader. Lt. Wodicka was a B-17 navigator and was taken as a POW to the Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany. He often sketched to make a simple, yet forceful, statements against the treatment of himself and his fellow prisoners. During his time at the camp, he compiled drawings, portraits, poems, and statements of his time in his 'Wartime Log'.
