20th Century Katana Handachi Koshirae, with Antique Tsuba. Nice katana koshirae (no blade), with circular family mons in gold lacquer decorating the dark orange/red painted saya. The tsuka is covered with same' ray skin and wrapped with good quality woven string type dark gold colored ito cord. The large silver-colored flower and leaves menuki and the bordered stipple finished fuchi/kashira look like modern pieces. The seppas are modern copper-colored metal with a brushed finish. The oval-shaped tsuba appears to be an antique piece, unsigned, made of copper, with carved designs of flowers and leaves, with a nice dark brownish copper patina. There are large three-lobed kozuka and kogai hitsuanas on either side of the nakago ana. Measures 71mm wide x 75 mm tall. The saya show some age, but the finish looks modern, as do the metal saya fittings. There is a gold-colored sageo cord tied thru the kurikata and around the saya. Condition is excellent, the paint on the saya is in nice shape, with a small ding on the top side edge and a small blister or bump in the center section. There are light scratches and chips around the mouth of the saya. A couple of the gold lacquer mons show some surface wear. The sageo cord is in very good shape. Tsuba has a couple of dings on either side, with some fine scratches and lines. The string cord wrapping on the tsuka has one small spot of fraying. The fuchi and kashira show some oxidation. There is a wooden tsunagi blade and habaki that holds the mounts together. It would be costly to have this made in Japan nowadays. Should make a nice display piece. Est.: $500-$700.
