Cal. 1 1/4" at bell. NSN. Bbl. approx. 13". During the 18th & early 19th centuries, advances in medical science, particularly surgery, were made primarily through the dissection of human bodies. The need for cadavers was great & the supply was small giving rise to the ghoulish occupation pursued by "resurrection men". These men would rob graves of freshly interred corpses & sell them to hospitals & universities for research. Cemetery guns were set in the vicinity of new graves to thwart the theft of the dearly departed. This early example features a belled iron bbl. w/ iron flintlock ignition system. The lock is marked, "BINGHAM". The gun is mostly encased in a wooden "stock". Firing is achieved by an iron bar attached to 3 rings which would have trip wires attached to them that fanned out in different directions. When the unwary "resurrection man" tripped a wire, his career could be suddenly cut short or at the very least, the cemetery keeper would be alerted by the blast. The whole mechanism is attached to a mounting bracket & pin. CONDITION: shows great age throughout & heavy wear. Iron parts show a deep oxidized patina. The wood has an ancient, nearly black patina. The "stock" has cracks, missing pieces & worm damage. Surprisingly, the entire gun remains quite solid & functional. (01-17082/BF). ANTIQUE. $1,800-2,400.
