1776. Horn measures approx. 10 1/4" in length. A fine original 18th century horn w/ engraving that reflects many cultures & nationalities. 1 Lg. crowned crest shows the Arms of Castile superimposed by a central shield bearing 3 fleur de lis. An adjacent crest shows a crowned double headed eagle similar to the Holy Roman Empire eagle but w/ a heart on the chest. Between the 2 crests is the date “1776”. Below the crest, a 7 building town scene is depicted w/ 2 striped flags flying that are reminiscent of very early American Revolutionary War era flags. The 3 masted ship of war in the harbor flies a British naval ensign. There are 2 other smaller ships in the harbor. Below the harbor scene is a lg. bell flower vine w/ the initials “TN” in the center. An extremely interesting horn w/ fascinating iconography worthy of further research. CONDITION: wooden butt plug is missing. There is notable wear in the area that rubbed while being carried. Carving is exceptionally well executed. Particularly notable in the town scene & the feathering of the eagle. (02-13574/BF). $1,500-2,000.
