JC-30101-226 Designed by United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, the U.S. "Morgan" dollar was a large coin (38 millimeters), and made of 90% silver. The total weight was over 3/4 of a troy ounce. The coin minted from 1878 to 1904, as well as in 1921. U.S. Dollar coins, unlike many other denominations, were not minted consistently. The last U.S. silver dollars minted before 1878 (not including the so-called "Trade Dollar") were issued in 1873. Liberty appears on the front, an eagle on the reverse. Production of the Morgan Dollar temporarily ceased in 1904, after silver supplies ran out. In 1921, Congress funded the production of millions of Morgan Dollars, although the design of the silver dollar soon changed thereafter. The next design, the "Peace" dollar, was minted until 1935. Thereafter, no silver dollars were coined until 1971. Among collectors, the Morgan Dollar is extremely popular. Unlike some coin series in which a similar number of coins were minted from year to year, Morgan mintages differ greatly. Many, but not all, rare date Morgans carry the "CC" (Carson City) mint mark.
