Mountain was born to Oglala Lakota Sioux parents and grew up with Crazy Horse. He and Crazy Horse were friends and fought in the Indian Wars together and Mountain also fought in the Red Cloud Wars. It is believed Mountain took this rifle from a soldier that was killed at the Bad Medicine Fight. Mountain surrendered with Crazy Horse on May 6, 1877.
