1801 NC-3 R6+ NGC Fine Details, Tooled
Here are my notices
Sharpness F12 or slightly better but covered with fine roughness that's partially hidden under a rather glossy dark olive brown and steel patina. No marks or verdigris, and there is no evidence of having been "Tooled" as claimed on the NGC label. The date and legends are complete and strong and the error fraction feature is obvious. Called net VG7 and tied for CC#4 in the Breen/Bland census behind three marginally finer examples (and a side-by-side comparison could easily move this one up the list). Noyes says net G6 and has this one tied for CC#3, his photo #22237. Our grade is net VG7. Clearly superior to the Breen plate coin for the variety, and that example is called net VG7 in the Breen/Bland census. Regardless of the grade opinion preferred this is a condition census example of a very rare die variety, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Mervis Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label.Certificate: 2038619-015Pedigree: Ex Willard C. Blaisdell-Dr. William H. Sheldon-Dorothy I. Paschal-William R. T.
