A - Paris Mint - 1757-A Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 41a. Rarity-7. Choice About Uncirculated, a piece that likely saw no active circulation and the light rub on the high points of either side a result of cabinet storage for a couple centuries. A really lovely coin, boldly struck, the surfaces hard and with vibrant original silvering over the fields; the lightly rubbed high points showing the darker toned billon hue, which gives a nice contrasting look to the coin. No real marks or damage from circulation, and a coin that has all the appearances of being saved by collectors from the time it was minted. The mint director changed during the 1757 calendar year, and the new director Jean Dupeyron changed the fox different of his predecessor to a heron; there were two major types of punctuation with this mark, one with a dot between the heron and ET, one without. An exceedingly rare variety – there was no example in any grade in either the Ford or Vlack collections, the latter quite amazing since he had the largest collection formed to that time. This is a special coin, combining condition and rarity, and we expect collector interest when it crossed the auction block.
