L – Bayonne Mint - 1750-L Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 139. Rarity-8. Nearly Very Fine, an impressive grade for any Bayonne Mint issue! The obverse legend is full, the letters and date strong; the reverse is weak at NA of NAV, the rest of the legend strong as is the charming dog different (which looks like a dachshund). Sharp design details on either side. Likely cleaned in the past and retoning, the surfaces still a light pink hue that should improve with time, especially as much of the original silvering remains. A few light spots of roughness and microscopic circulation marks, but an attractive example overall for a mint whose few coins extant seem to be in very low grades. Another exceedingly rare year, the mint not represented at all in the Ford collection as noted above, and this year also missing from the comprehensive Vlack collection – making a rare opportunity for the specialist to obtain something that eluded two of the leading collectors of the late 20th century!
