K – Bordeaux Mint - 1741-K Billon Sous Marques. Vlack UNLISTED, will be called Vlack 124a. Rarity-8. Very Fine, rather boldly struck, the legend, date and mintmark all sharp, as is the design detail. This variety is unlisted, and has a stop both before and after the K mintmark on the obverse (a variation that is known for 1739 and 1740, but not noted for 1741 prior to this; both those are listed as Rarity-8). Most of the original silvering remains, toned down to a light gray, the obverse with some russet toning at the bottom half, and the reverse with a few light striations. The Bordeaux Mint was not represented in the Ford collection at all, and only two varieties are even remotely collectible, both considered Rarity-5. This particular date though is listed by Vlack as a full Rarity-8 – and that certainly seems accurate since the author of the book did not have a 1741-K in his collection in any grade! A very special coin that the specialist would do well to consider, the opportunity for another may not come around for quite some time.
