L – Bayonne Mint - 1739-L Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 128. Rarity-8. Fine/Good, the reverse much weaker than the obverse due to die failure. On the obverse the first and last couple letters of the legend are weak or gone, the rest sharp including the all-important mintmark, the date is weak but visible, and the central design is strong. The reverse has most of LUD and just traces of the rest of the legend, the crown and top of the L very faint. Clearly given the strength of the obverse the weakness on the reverse must be as struck. Light gray with a fair amount of original silvering on the obverse. The Bayonne mint is one of the rarest in the entire Sous Marques series; despite striking the denomination from 1739-1752 few examples have survived. Vlack calls two varieties Rarity-7 and all the rest are Rarity-8, making this one of the toughest to find for the variety or mint collector. Indeed, there was no example of a Bayonne mint issue of any date in the Ford sale – and Vlack did not have an example of this date and mintmark either! Bayonne issues are usually seen only when major collections are sold, and are hotly contested when they appear.
