V – Troyes Mint - 1739/0-V Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 192a. Rarity-8. Choice Uncirculated, in a PCGS slab where it is graded MS63, the slab erroneously listing the mintmark as K for Bordeaux. An exceptional grade for a Sous Marques – and certainly the finest known for this extremely rare variety, which Vlack describes as “the 9 in date retooled from 0,” which is here bold. It is likely that the engraver grabbed an 0 punch by mistake, recognized his error and added a little tail to the base to turn it into a 9; the original 0 is the same size as the other numbers, and the addition of the tail makes the 9 larger than the others - compared to the Vlack 192 variety (three of which were in the Vlack sale) the error is obvious, as the regular 192 has a much smaller and perfectly formed 9. Boldly struck, everything crisp and sharp as expected for a coin in this grade, the original silvering full, and toning a lovely light golden hue. Free of marks or damage, and a most attractive specimen in every respect. The 192a variation is extremely rare – so much so that neither Ford or Vlack owned an example! As just a regular Sous Marques of a common variety, this would be a choice coin – but for an R-8 variety it is exceptional! We note that Vlack’s example of the much more common 193 variety of this date and mint was a Choice About Uncirculated that brought US $2,875 – and that was a Rarity-2 variety and not a full Unc!
