1734-Q [Perpignan Mint] John Law Sol, another. Extremely Fine, an amazing error coin, BOLDLY DOUBLE STRUCK, the first strike properly centered, the second strike about 40% off-center towards one o’clock. The lower part of the bust and the crown of the shield are boldly impressed twice, and even more important, there are two dates visible, the original strike with the last two digits bold, and the off-center strike showing the full date. An exceptionally rare error – indeed, this was the only double struck Sol we were aware of until the Smith article was published, which illustrated a very similar double strike, but on a 1723-dated Half Sol.; it is likely unique as a double strike for this date. Attractive medium brown, the surfaces mostly hard, with just one flaw on the obverse at the neck of the original strike, but surprisingly clean otherwise – almost unheard of for a late Perpignan piece! Without the double strike this would have been a very desirable coin since it is the nicest overall looking 1734-dated piece we have ever seen. With a major, dramatic and very eye-catching error like this it becomes a coin that will be the centerpiece of any collection. It is certainly unique as a major double strike for this date, and may well be the only Sol known with such an error. Expect to see many hands in the air when this piece crosses the auction block!
