1725-Q [Perpignan Mint] John Law Sol. Extremely Fine in terms of wear, surfaces not quite up to that level, and the strike weak at the extreme right edge, weakening the letters there. The rest of the legend is sharp, and the date and mintmark both bold. Mottled mahogany, the surfaces lightly but evenly rough, with a few light edge splits at the left of either side, though better than usually found for the late-date Perpignan issues. This piece shows the hat mark of Brodus, to the left of the date and while his work had certainly improved by the time he became chief engraver, it was far from perfect. The D of DEI is notably double punched and the Q mintmark is lying on its side somewhat, and clearly made from an O punch with the tail added to the die by hand. This date has traditionally been considered to be very rare, but Smith found 14 examples in the 262 Sols he examined, a surprising number as we have not seen many offered for sale in recent years.
