1725-Q [Perpignan Mint] John Law Sol, another. Very Good, a well-used specimen though surprisingly with the legend mostly strong – the first few letters on the obverse and REX on the reverse lost, the rest all there, including the date and mintmark. Mottled russet with some light green corrosion on either side, the surfaces with a light roughness, but overall few marks. While the grade isn’t that wonderful, this is an extremely rare variety – it has the hat different by Brodus, but here placed AFTER the date. This occurred on both the 1725 and 1726-dated issues for some unknown reason. For this date, there was a whopping one example in the group of 262 Sols seen by Smith (possibly this exact specimen). Its rarity certainly transcends the condition of the coin, and we expect keen interest in this from specialists in the series – we have not seen another example at auction or for private sale, ever.
