1723/2-Q [Perpignan Mint] John Law Sol. Fine or slightly better, the legends, date and mintmark all full, a few letters occasionally weaker than their neighbors. Design details as expected for the grade, if not sharper. Medium brown, the planchet with a few flaws near the edge, and with some ancient scratches visible at the centers of either side, all toned down. This is a previously unlisted overdate, first noted in Rock’s article where he states “the overdate here is subtle, with the lower base of the original ‘2’ visible at the base of the ‘3,’ especially at the right side where it extends further out than the curve of the ‘3’ does.” This is the exact specimen illustrated in that article, and is doubtless quite rare – no example of the overdate is listed in Smith’s census of some 262 different Sols (and the whopping 75 from Perpignan dated 1723). The first that we have seen, and a coin for the advanced collector.
