1720/19-S [Reims Mint] John Law Sol. Very Fine, well struck overall, the legends full on either side, the letters mostly sharp, and with nice design detail. Very light brown, almost brassy alloy, the surfaces with a light roughness that appears due to that improper alloy, and just a few light marks from circulation. An extremely rare overdate in the series, this coin was plated in Rock’s article for The C4 Newsletter where he notes “the vertical part of the original ‘1’ is visible at the left edge of the ‘2’ and the curved base of the original ‘9’ is visible at the lower left part of the ‘0’ where it connects with the right base of the ‘2’ in the overdate.” In his survey of 262 Sols, Smith saw just a single example of this overdate, which according to his citation is this exact coin. This is a fascinating piece because both dies are of the Guiquero type – with his ermine mark under the bust and no mark before the date on the reverse. But the original die, dated 1719, MUST have been made by LaHaye since he was the engraver in Reims for that entire year, and part of 1720. So the die must have either not had LaHaye’s mark before the date or else Guiquero was able to grind it down and remove his predecessor’s mark. Smith illustrates some transitional types for this date as well – obverse dies from one engraver and reverse from the other, further adding to the complexities for the date. In any event, an extremely rare issue, perhaps the only example available to the collector today.
