1719-AA [Metz Mint] John Law Sol. Extremely Fine or nearly there, well struck, on a slightly rough planchet that is typical for the type, though still quite attractive, especially with the sharp design detail. The present example has the engraver’s mark on the reverse before the word REX – on all other issues it comes after that word, and before the date (most of the other mints also put the engraver’s mark on the obverse, so Metz apparently did things their own way); Smith notes that the mark is at “10:00 on reverse” but doesn’t note the unusual placement and unfortunately does not illustrate an example of the Sol, possibly because it is rare – in his survey of 262 example only 3 were of this date and mintmark and planchet size.
