DOCUMENT BOX FOR THE 31ST WISCONSIN. A charcoal gray painted ammunition box stenciled in white on both ends. Stencil reads, “1,000 RIFLE MUSKET CAL’B CARTRIDGE & CAPS 69/100”. Box measures 19 7/8” x 13 1/4" x 8 3/4" high. The lid is carved & reads, “Company XX A.C. Books of Co G 31st Wis V.”. This translates to Company Books of Company G of the 31st Wisconsin Volunteers of the 20th Corps in the Army of the Cumberland. The exterior of the box has 2 mismatched iron hinges & the original 2 wooden handles on each end. Attached to the interior lid is a partial document believed to be instructions on record keeping. This chest belonged to Captain Farlin Quigley Ball who was born in Shelby County, Ohio in 1838. There are approx. 100 documents inside the box pertaining to Capt. Ball & his regiment. They include enlistment papers, various returns & muster rolls from 1863-1865 w/ significant details on individual soldiers within the company. CONDITION: the outside of the box shows significant wear w/ approx. 70% of the finish intact. Both ends of the box have completely legible stencils. There are a few cracks & minor losses to the box itself but it remains substantially intact & solid. The papers are quite legible & show average wear & tear for the period. A truly exceptional archive pertaining to the service of the 31st Wisconsin. (02-13497/BF). $3,500-5,000.
