Princely States: Hyderabad, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan II (1869-1911 AD), silver pattern rupee, Hyderabad Mint, AH 1294, Zeno #177765, 10.88g. Obv: Persian legend Yak Rupaya Hali within a floral border. Rev: Persian legend Haidarabad Dakan Sanah 1294 within floral border.

Attractively toned, Sharp strike, Exceptional eye appeal, Uncirculated, Exceedingly rare.

According to Jan Lingen's scholarly paper in JONS, attempts were made to introduce mechanized coin production in Hyderabad around 1894AD, with the first machine-struck coins, dated AH 1312, being brought into circulation during that year. This coin, unlisted in any publications, proves that the attempts actually extended back to AH 1294 or eighteen years prior to this. Several companies were interested in setting up machines at the Nizam's mint and attempts were also made to purchase machinery from the decommissioned British mint at Madras. This coin is a significant marker for the history of mechanised coin production in Princely India.

Similar coin was sold in Classical Numismatic Gallery Auction 26 (2017), Lot no.: 519.
