Portuguese India, Donna Maria I (1777-1799 AD), Goa - copper tanga, dated 1787 AD, countermarked 'PR 809' in the reign of Dom Miguel I (1828-1834), Ferrao-Vaz Mi-12 but undertype not listed, 37.08g.

Good very fine, Very rare.

Older copper coins were counterstamped, by order of a decree dated 25 July 1831, to separate false coinage from good. This measure had been recommended by the board of the Treasury and the Overseer of the Mint was ordered to carry it out in a note dated 17 February 1832. The countermark 'PR 809' stands for 'Portaria Registrada No. 809' meaning, 'Registered Determination No. 809'.
