Independent Kingdoms: Sikh Empire - silver rupee of Ranjit Singh (1799-1839 AD), Amritsar mint, VS 1863, known as the 'Mora shahi' rupee, Herrli 01.13.04, 10.99g. Obv: 'Nanakshahi' couplet, version V; rosette between 'Guru' and 'Gobind' and fish symbol below 'Singh'. Rev: 'Julus' formula with 'sprig'-symbol replacing the usual Ber leaf symbol and another sprig to left. (From the collection of Mr. I.K. Kejriwal)

Good very fine, Rare.

The 'Mora Shahi' coins were once associated with Ranjit Singh's predilection with a concubine named Moran (following Cunningham's remarks), but the story is baseless and now discredited as bazaar gossip. The symbol in all likelihood represents a bunch of Ber fruits, or its blossom (the word 'Maur' also refers to blossom of fruiting trees).
