Independent Kingdoms: Sikh Empire - silver rupee of Ranjit Singh (1799-1839 AD), Amritsar mint, VS 1862, known as the 'Arsiwala shahi' rupee, Herrli 01.16.02, 11.03g. Obv: 'Nanakshahi' couplet, version V. Rev: 'Julus' formula with 'flower'-symbol replacing the usual Ber leaf symbol. (From the collection of Mr. I.K. Kejriwal)

Toned, About Extremely fine, Very rare.

The coins take their popular name from 'Arsi', or a mirror-ring, usually worn by brides but also popular in the community of dancing girls. It was once associated with Ranjit Singh's predilection with a concubine but the story is baseless and now discarded. The symbol in all likelihood represents the flower of the Ber tree.
